North East based Costume, Prop, and Set Designer & Maker and Creative Workshop Facilitator
I'm Lucy Minta Reeves, a Newcastle-based costume, prop, and set designer, maker, and creative practitioner with 18 years’ professional experience across theatre, dance, circus, live events, fashion and film.
My practice sits somewhere between design, making and problem-solving. I love taking an idea from the earliest stages of development through to the finished piece, whether that means designing a character, constructing a costume, transforming found materials into a set, or figuring out how something can work practically on stage. I’m happiest making things with my hands, finding creative solutions and bringing ideas to life.
Sustainability is central to the way I work. I’m passionate about reusing, repurposing and giving materials a second life, and I regularly work with second-hand clothing, reclaimed fabrics, surplus stock and materials that might otherwise be overlooked. I’m interested in how resourcefulness can become part of the creative process rather than a limitation.
Alongside my freelance practice, I work as a teacher and facilitator, delivering fashion design, sewing, making and upcycling workshops with both young people and adults. I particularly enjoy creating accessible, hands-on opportunities for people to experiment, learn new skills and make something of their own.
I’m also increasingly interested in creative work that connects people with their places and communities. Through residencies, community projects and participatory events, I enjoy using textiles, making and storytelling as ways of bringing people together and creating something that feels meaningful to the people involved.
Based in the North East, I’m always interested in working with artists, designers, makers, producers, organisations and communities on projects that are imaginative, collaborative and a little bit different.
